Roger Craig, born on July 10, 1960, in Davenport, Iowa, is a former professional American football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) primarily for the San Francisco 49ers from 1983 to 1990. A standout at the University of Nebraska, where he earned All-American honors, Craig was selected in the third round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the 49ers. He quickly established himself as a versatile player, known for his powerful running and receiving skills.
Craig is best known for his contributions to the dominant 49ers teams of the 1980s, which won three Super Bowl championships (XIX, XXIII, XXIV) during his tenure. He was the first player in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards and catch over 1,000 yards in the same season, achieving this milestone in 1985. Craig was named to four Pro Bowls and was a key figure in the 49ers’ offensive success, earning a reputation as one of the league’s premier dual-threat running backs.
