Born on March 15, 1985, in Atlanta, Georgia, Godfrey played collegiate basketball at the University of North Carolina, where he was a standout player, earning All-ACC honors for three consecutive years. He declared for the NBA Draft after his junior season and was selected 17th overall by the Seattle Supersonics in 2007.
