Roland Ratzenberger was an Austrian racing driver born on July 4, 1960, in Salzburg, Austria. He began his motorsport career in karting before progressing to single-seater racing in the 1980s, where he competed in various European formulas, including the Formula Ford Euroseries and Formula 3. His tenacity and talent eventually led him to sign with the Simtek team in the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1994.
Ratzenberger made his Formula 1 debut at the 1994 Brazilian Grand Prix, becoming the first Austrian driver to participate in the series since 1971. His best qualifying performance came at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, where he started in 26th position. Tragically, his racing career was cut short when he suffered a fatal accident during qualifying at the same event on April 30, 1994, making him the first F1 driver to perish in a race weekend since 1982.
