Born on March 14, 1965, in Champaign, Illinois, Porter excelled in high school basketball, earning All-American honors and subsequently receiving a scholarship to play at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During his collegiate career, he was a key player on the Bruins' 1985 NCAA Championship team, showcasing his skills as a versatile forward.
After graduation, Porter was selected in the second round of the 1987 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets.
