Biography
Sami Salo, born on September 2, 1974, in Turku, Finland, is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey defenseman known for his powerful shot and solid defensive play. He began his professional career in the Finnish SM-liiga with Turun Palloseura before making the transition to the NHL, where he played for teams including the Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Vancouver Canucks. Salo was selected 239th overall by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
Throughout his NHL career, which spanned from 1998 to 2013, Salo appeared in over 600 regular-season games and was recognized for his contributions to his teams, notably during the 2007-08 season when he scored a career-high 14 goals with the Canucks. He was also known for his impact on the international stage, representing Finland in multiple World Championships and the Winter Olympics, where he won a silver medal in 2006.
