Biography
Sheldon Keefe, born on September 17, 1980, in Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada, is a former professional ice hockey player and current head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). Keefe played junior hockey with the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Pembroke Lumber Kings and then progressed to the professional level, where he played for teams such as the Tampa Bay Lightning and the American Hockey League’s (AHL) various affiliates. Over his playing career, he demonstrated strong offensive skills, but injuries limited his time in the NHL.
After retiring from professional play, Keefe transitioned to coaching, starting in the junior ranks before joining the AHL. He gained significant recognition as the head coach of the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Maple Leafs, leading them to a Calder Cup championship in 2018. His coaching style, marked by a focus on skill development and team cohesion, earned him accolades within the league and propelled him to the NHL coaching ranks.
In November 2019, Keefe was appointed head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he has since aimed to revitalize the franchise’s competitive edge. Under his leadership, the team has showcased notable improvements in performance, both in regular season standings and playoff appearances.
