Biography
Stefan Liv, born on December 21, 1980, in Stockholm, Sweden, was a professional ice hockey goaltender widely known for his contributions to both the Swedish national team and various club teams in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). He began his career with Hammarby IF in 1996 and later played for the prestigious Djurgårdens IF, where he helped the team secure the Swedish Championship in 2000. Liv also had a brief stint in the NHL, playing with the Detroit Red Wings, although he achieved greater acclaim upon returning to Europe.
Liv’s international career was marked by significant achievements, including winning the gold medal with the Swedish national team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. His performances in various international competitions, including the IIHF World Championships, showcased his skills and solidified his reputation as a top goaltender during his peak years. His dedication and tenacity on the ice earned him a respected place among Swedish hockey legends.
Tragically, Stefan Liv's life came to an untimely end in a plane crash in 2011, which also claimed the lives of several other members of the team he was coaching at the time, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
