Drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third round, 69th overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, he quickly made an impact in the league. Mason achieved early fame during the 2008-2009 season, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year after posting a remarkable 33 wins and a goals-against average of 2.29.
