Biography
Steve Shields is a retired Canadian ice hockey goaltender, born on July 19, 1972, in St. Catharines, Ontario. He played junior hockey with the St. Catharines Falcons in the Ontario Hockey Association before being drafted in the 5th round, 119th overall, by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Shields made his NHL debut with the Sabres during the 1995-96 season, subsequently appearing for several teams including the Anaheim Ducks, Florida Panthers, and the Atlanta Thrashers.
Throughout his career, Shields was known for his solid goaltending skills and consistency on the ice. He recorded his best season during the 1996-97 campaign, where he achieved a career-high 22 wins and garnered a reputation as a reliable backup goaltender. Over his ten-year professional career, he played in over 200 NHL games, earning a record of 57 wins, 65 losses, and 18 ties, along with a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.94.
After retiring from professional play in 2004, Shields left a lasting impact on the ice hockey community, transitioning into coaching and mentorship roles.
