Biography
Steven Wilks, born on August 8, 1969, in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a former professional American football player and current coach in the National Football League (NFL). A standout player at the University of Notre Dame, Wilks played as a defensive back and was known for his excellent coverage skills. He went undrafted in the 1991 NFL Draft but was quickly signed by the Atlanta Falcons, marking the beginning of his professional career.
Wilks played four seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Falcons, where he developed a reputation as a tenacious and skilled defensive player. After retiring from playing, he transitioned into coaching, serving in various roles at the collegiate and professional levels. His coaching career includes stints with the Chicago Bears, the San Diego Chargers, and a notable tenure as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, where he helped spearhead a formidable defense that aided in the team’s Super Bowl L50 appearance.
In 2018, Wilks became the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, making history as one of the few African American coaches to lead an NFL team.
