Biography
Stéphane Matteau, born on September 2, 1969, in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec, Canada, is a former professional ice hockey player known for his impactful career in the National Hockey League (NHL). Drafted 144th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 7th round of the 1992 NHL Draft, Matteau made his NHL debut in the 1992-93 season. Throughout his career, he played for several teams, including the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, and the Colorado Avalanche.
Matteau is perhaps best remembered for his clutch performances in the playoffs, particularly during the 1994 Stanley Cup run with the New York Rangers. His most notable moment came in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final, where he scored the series-winning goal against the New Jersey Devils, a play that remains a highlight in Rangers' history. He contributed to the Rangers' victory in the Stanley Cup Finals that year, marking the team's first championship in 54 years.
After his tenure in the NHL, which lasted until 2000, Matteau transitioned to play in various minor leagues before retiring from professional hockey.
