Sunil Wettimuny, born on February 2, 1949, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a former cricketer who played as an opening batsman for the Sri Lankan national team. He was a key figure in the 1980s when Sri Lanka was emerging as a competitive force in international cricket. Wettimuny made his debut in Test cricket in 1982 and represented his country in 39 Test matches and 4 One Day Internationals (ODIs) until his retirement in 1987.
Wettimuny's most notable achievement came during the 1983 Cricket World Cup, where he scored 190 runs across three matches, showcasing his potential on a global stage. His steady performances provided valuable experience to a developing Sri Lankan side, paving the way for future generations of cricketers. In addition to his international career, he also had a successful domestic career, playing for clubs such as the Sinhalese Sports Club.
