The Ted Hendricks Award is named in honor of NFL linebacker Ted Hendricks, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players in football history. Born on November 1, 1947, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Hendricks had a stellar college career at the University of Miami, where he earned consensus All-American honors. He entered the NFL in 1969 when he was selected in the fourth round of the draft by the Baltimore Colts.
Hendricks played 15 seasons in the NFL, representing the Baltimore Colts, Green Bay Packers, and Los Angeles Raiders. Throughout his career, he was known for his exceptional versatility, size, and athleticism, which allowed him to excel at outside linebacker, strong safety, and even defensive end. Hendricks was a four-time Pro Bowler and a key member of the Raiders' Super Bowl XV winning team, culminating in his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
Following his retirement, the Ted Hendricks Award was established in 2002 to honor the top collegiate defensive end in the United States, recognizing players who demonstrate excellence on and off the field, reflecting Hendricks’ legacy.
