A standout athlete, Grentz played for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights from 1972 to 1976, where she was a key player under the legendary coach C. Vivian Stringer. Her performance laid the foundation for her later achievements in coaching.
Grentz began her coaching career as an assistant at Rutgers before taking the head coaching position at the University of Illinois, where she served from 1991 to 2007. Under her leadership, the Fighting Illini became a competitive force in the Big Ten Conference.
