After playing college basketball at the University of Tennessee, Boerwinkle was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the third overall pick in the 1968 NBA Draft. His tenure with the Bulls spanned from 1968 to 1976, where he became recognized for his rebounding prowess and versatility on the court.

Throughout his NBA career, Boerwinkle averaged 10.2 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.
