Vijay Hazare, born on March 11, 1915, in Indore, India, was a prominent Indian cricketer and a key figure in the sport's early post-independence era. Known for his solid batting technique and leadership qualities, Hazare represented India in both Test and One Day Internationals. He was a member of India's inaugural Test team, making his debut against England in 1946.
Over his career, Hazare played 30 Test matches, scoring 1,453 runs at an average of 47.53, which included four centuries and seven fifties. His most notable performance came during a Test series against Australia in 1947-48, where he scored a remarkable 219 runs in a single match. Additionally, he was a pioneer in the limited-overs format, captaining India in the first-ever ODI against England in 1975.
After retiring from international cricket, Hazare made significant contributions as a selector and coach, shaping the future of Indian cricket. His legacy extends beyond the field, as he was instrumental in promoting the sport across the country.
