Biography
Wayne Fontes, born on February 2, 1940, is a former professional American football player and coach, best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). He played as a defensive back in college at the University of Arizona, and later went undrafted in 1963, signing with the Los Angeles Rams. Fontes’ playing career was short-lived, as he transitioned to coaching shortly after hanging up his cleats.
Fontes began his coaching career in the 1970s, eventually rising through the ranks to become the head coach of the Lions in 1991. Under his leadership, the team experienced notable success, including a trip to the NFC Championship game in 1991 and securing three playoff berths during his tenure.
