Biography
Weeb Ewbank was an American football player and coach, born on May 6, 1907, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He played college football at Miami University in Ohio and later became a professional player in the National Football League (NFL) for the Cleveland Browns and the New York Yankees. While his playing career was notable, it was his coaching career that would establish him as a significant figure in NFL history.
Ewbank began his coaching tenure with the NFL's Baltimore Colts in 1954, leading them to their first championship in 1958. He achieved legendary status as the head coach of the New York Jets, where he guided the team to victory in Super Bowl III in 1969. This remarkable win cemented his reputation in professional football, as the Jets triumphed against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, with quarterback Joe Namath famously guaranteeing the victory.
Throughout his career, Ewbank was known for his innovative coaching strategies and leadership skills.
