Willie Thrower was born on March 22, 1930, in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. He played college football at Michigan State University, where he distinguished himself as a talented quarterback. Following his collegiate success, he was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 1953 NFL Draft, marking the beginning of a significant career in professional football.
Thrower made history during his time with the Bears, becoming the first African American quarterback to play in the NFL in the post-World War II era. He made his debut in 1953 and showcased his skills in 1954, leading his team in several games with impressive performances. Despite facing challenges in a predominantly white league, he paved the way for future generations of African American quarterbacks.
